Mather Brown was an American portrait and history painter active in England. Born in Boston, he arrived in London in 1781 and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1782. He began to exhibit there a year later, and set up a portrait painting practice in London.

Brown’s grand-manner portrait of General George Eliott (1717–1790) is a great spectacle that captured both the painter and his subject at the pinnacle of their respective careers. Descended from America’s earliest settlers, Brown grew up in Boston and trained in London under Benjamin West.
