Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley MC RA ROI (31 March 1880 – 6 May 1952) was an English portrait painter and royal portraitist in the early part of the 20th century.

Sir Oswald Birley (1880 -1952) was one of Britain’s most successful portrait painters. From 1919 until the early 1950s he was the go-to artist of the time, commissioned by the Royal family, the aristocracy, politicians, artists, scientists –leading figures of their day.
Painter Sir Oswald Birley was born in New Zealand while his parents were on a world tour. He served in France in the World War I first with the Royal Fusiliers, later transferring to the Intelligence Corps obtaining the rank of Captain and being awarded the Military Cross in 1919.

Oswald Birley was one of the most successful portrait painters of his generation. He trained in Paris under Marcel Baschet at the Académie Julian from 1901 to 1904, exhibiting regularly at the Salon. In 1905 he travelled to Spain and made a series of copies after Velázquez.
