Ceolwulf I was the King of Mercia, a kingdom of Anglo-Saxon England, from 821 until his deposition in 823. He was the brother of Coenwulf, his predecessor, and was deposed by Beornwulf.

Ceolwulf I was the King of Mercia, East Anglia and Kent from 821 to 823. He succeeded his brother Coenwulf of Mercia. There was a great deal of disagreement among his noblemen during his short reign. He was deposed and exiled from Mercia by Beornwulf of Mercia who claimed the throne himself.

3 de may. de 2023 · After the Vikings ousted Mercian king Burgred by 874, Ceolwulf, the last king of Mercia was on the throne. According to many sources, he wasn’t in charge and was a puppet of the Viking leaders. Others, however, suggest he was in fact a king in reality as well as in name.
