He was born and lived in Elmley Castle, Worcestershire the eldest son of Walter de Beauchamp and his wife Joan de Mortimer. On the death of his father in 1236 he became hereditary Sheriff of Worcestershire which title he held until his own death. He died in 1268.

He served under Sir John Chandos during the Hundred Years' War, and was created a Knight of the Garter in 1376.
