  4. Richard Stephen Ritchie was a highly decorated officer in the United States Air Force who served during the Vietnam War. He was born in Reidsville, North Carolina and had no aspirations to become a pilot during his childhood and youth. However, he excelled as a football player in school.

  5. Promoted to brigadier general in the Air Force Reserve in 1994, he became the mobilization assistant to the commander of Air Force Recruiting Service. For six years, he traveled across the United States, speaking to approximately 1,100 audiences in support of Air Force recruiting efforts.

  6. A low-altitude dogfight 30 miles west of Hanoi on 8 July gave him two more MiG-21s, and on 28 August he destroyed a fifth MiG-21 to become the Air Force’s only ace pilot of the Vietnam War and America’s only MiG-21 ace.
