Brent Spence (December 24, 1874 – September 18, 1967), a native of Newport, Kentucky, was a long time Democratic Congressman, attorney, and banker from Northern Kentucky. Spence was born in Newport, Kentucky to Philip and Virginia (Berry) Spence.
The Brent Spence Bridge is a double decker, cantilevered truss bridge that carries Interstates 71 and 75 across the Ohio River between Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. The top deck carries Kentucky-bound traffic while the bottom deck carries Ohio-bound traffic.

The Brent Spence Bridge is a major thoroughfare for both local and national traffic, connecting two states that are critical to the movement of people, goods, and services. The bridge carries I-71 and I-75 traffic over the Ohio River and has four lanes of traffic on each of the upper and lower decks.
The Brent Spence Bridge is structurally sound and will remain in service for local traffic. To maintain a smooth passage of freight along the vital I-71/75 national corridor, a new companion bridge will be built for through traffic, enhancing traffic flow for both regional and national travelers.
