The Hughes H-1 racer was developed to be the fastest landplane in the world, Also known as the 1B Racer, it was designed by Howard Hughes and Richard Palmer and built by Glenn Odekirk. On September 13, 1935, Hughes achieved the design goal by flying the H-1 to a new world speed record of 352.322 mph.
Glenn Odekirk was a skilled mechanic and production chief who helped Howard Hughes build his first plane, the H-1 racer, in 1934. The H-1 set speed and distance records and paved the way for Hughes' aviation career and fortune.
