Marshal of the Royal Air Force Hugh Montague Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard, GCB, OM, GCVO, DSO (3 February 1873 – 10 February 1956) was a British officer who was instrumental in establishing the Royal Air Force.
Hugh Montague Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard was a British officer and air marshal who helped lay the foundations of the Royal Air Force (RAF). Trenchard entered the army in 1893 and served in the South African War and later in Nigeria.
The ashes of 'the father of the Royal Air Force' Hugh Trenchard, 1st Viscount Trenchard G.C.B., O.M., G.C.V.O., D.S.O. are buried in the RAF chapel at the east end of the Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey. The inscription simply reads: TRENCHARD MARSHAL OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE 1873-1956.
A dashing cavalry officer. On the outbreak of the South African War in October 1899 Trenchard was sent to South Africa. Promoted to captain in February 1900, he was told to raise and train a mounted company which brought together a bunch of boisterous, aggressive horsemen, many of them Australian.
