Prince Edmond de Polignac (1834–1901) came from a family that could trace its princely ancestry back to the court of Louis XIV (MMM, 64). A large period of his childhood was spent in Bavaria, and his education was multi-lingual and wide-ranging, taking in Latin, Greek, mathematics, and, naturally for one of his social class, music and art.
