Clotilde was the third child and eldest daughter of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his wife Princess Clémentine of Orléans. Her youngest brother was Ferdinand I of Bulgaria and her paternal uncle was Ferdinand II of Portugal .

Princess Clotilde was the third child and eldest daughter of Prince Augustus of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Princess Clémentine, daughter of Louis-Philippe, King of the French. She married, in 1864, Archduke Joseph of Austria (1833 – 1905) with whom she had two sons and five daughters.
Princess Clémentine of Orléans (French: Marie Clémentine Léopoldine Caroline Clotilde d'Orléans) (3 June 1817 – 16 February 1907), princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and duchess in Saxony, was the sixth child and youngest daughter of Louis-Philippe I, King of the French, and his wife Maria Amalia of the Two Sicilies.
