  7. In 1688, the Duke of Hamilton surrendered his previous titles, and they were reconferred on his second son, Lord Charles Hamilton, who became 2nd Earl of Selkirk, and who changed his surname to Douglas with a special remainder designed to prevent them becoming merged with the Dukedom.
