About Balliol. Balliol College is a thriving academic community in the heart of Oxford. It exists to advance education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, to facilitate and to encourage scholarship and research at the very highest levels, and to promote excellence in learning, as one of the colleges within the University of Oxford.
Balliol has existed as a community of scholars on its present Broad Street site without interruption since about 1263. By this token it claims to be the oldest college in Oxford, and in the English-speaking world. In 1260 a dispute between John de Balliol and the Bishop of Durham erupted into violence and Henry III condemned Balliol’s behaviour.

Geschiedenis. Het college werd onder leiding van de bisschop van Durham in 1263 gesticht door John I de Balliol, een Schotse edelman van Picardische oorsprong. Na zijn dood in 1269, maakte zijn weduwe Dervorguilla van Galloway de stichting definitief: ze bracht de nodige goederen in en formuleerde in 1282 de statuten van het college. Het college bleef lange tijd van bescheiden formaat.

Balliol was the birthplace of the degree of PPE in the 1920 s, and the College has long remained a major centre for the study of PPE.Nowadays, Balliol PPE is distinctive in three related ways.. Firstly, we have a particularly large school of PPE undergraduates, and the College is committed to maintaining a strong teaching team in each of the three subjects.
