This painting celebrates the magnificent harvest of 1854. Collins adds an extra dimension by painting the child holding a bound sheaf of wheat, both the traditional symbol of concord and the attribute of Ceres, classical goddess of agriculture and abundance.

Charles Allston Collins, né à Londres le 25 janvier 1828 et mort le 9 avril 1873 dans cette même ville, est un peintre, illustrateur et écrivain britannique associé au mouvement préraphaélique. Il est également le gendre du grand romancier britannique Charles Dickens .

Charles Allston Collins, the brother of author Wilkie Collins, was a British artist and illustrator. Although not an official member his work is most closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He later embarked on a writing career his most successful work was 'The Eye Witness' published in 1860. Collins married Charles Dicken's daughter Kate. He died aged 45 from cancer in 1873.
