History 20th century. The Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study was founded in 1961 by the then-president of Radcliffe College, Mary Ingraham Bunting, who sought to stem the exodus of highly trained and educated women from promising careers.The institute provided stipends as well as access to all of the resources of Harvard University to take up their chosen creative intellectual studies.

The Harvard Annex Alumnae Association was established in 1887 and renamed the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association in 1897. It was administered by a president, a board of managers and an executive secretary (who was first appointed in 1920) and included representatives who served on the Board of Trustees of Radcliffe College.
