He was a drummer and founding member of the influential 1970s Canadian progressive rock band Rush. Formed in Toronto, Ontario Canada during 1968, the trio also consisted of bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist Jeff Jones (who was replaced by Lee).

In 1974, he reportedly left the band in part due to vaguely defined "health reasons." Although bandmate Geddy Lee disputed that in a 2003 interview, he did acknowledge that Rutsey had been dealing with diabetes for quite some time.
