Né dans une famille bourgeoise, il délaisse ses études de chimie, préférant fréquenter les milieux d’avant-garde littéraire et artistique, rejoignant les surréalistes avant de se consacrer à une écriture plus personnelle.
Michel Leiris est avant tout un homme de lettres. Son ambition première fut d’être poète, ses penchants ethnologiques et autobiographiques ne sont venus que par la suite, comme il le racontait en 1968, au micro de la productrice Paule Chavasse dans une série de quatre entretiens.
